Santorini Events 21–28 September 2026: Strongyli, Rap Fest, Cinema & New Exhibitions

Why this week is worth watching

Santorini is moving into its late-season rhythm. The island is still busy, but the event calendar is beginning to look more local and more spread out: village squares, community halls, a winery on Thirasia, a cultural centre in Megalochori and small exhibition spaces rather than one giant tourist event.

Atlantea's current island calendar describes 21–28 September as one of the final concentrated event weeks of the season. That is useful for residents as well as visitors: several events are free, many start after the heat of the day, and a few give travellers a reason to leave the standard caldera circuit.

Monday 21 September: cinema and music

Santo Mine in Oia screens The Bucket List at 20:30. The screening is free, but the event listing includes a seat-reservation link, so this is not one to treat as a casual walk-in if you are building your evening around it.

At 21:00 in Imerovigli, a separate “Musical Encounters” evening adds a live local option to Monday night. If you are staying on the caldera rim, this is the easiest date of the week to add without reorganising a whole day.

Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24: Megalochori and Kamari

Wednesday has two very different choices. At 21:00 at Symposion Culture Centre in Megalochori, musician Giannis Pantazis presents Notes of the Centuries; the current listing gives a €20 ticket price. At the same time in Kamari, Strongyli On the Road presents the children's performance The Song That Lost Its Voice, with free entry.

On Thursday, Kamari switches to a more traditional island atmosphere. A Panagia Myrtidiotissa village feast begins at 20:30 in Kamari's central square, with free entry. For visitors who only know Kamari as a beach resort, this is a better glimpse of the community side of the village than another night on the promenade.

Friday 25: new art on Thirasia and Strongyli in Kamari

The week's most interesting detour is across the caldera. At 18:00, painter Pantelis Leousis opens his exhibition Volcano at Mikra Thira Winery in Potamos, Thirasia. The exhibition is free and continues beyond opening night, so people who cannot make Friday can still consider it later.

Back on Santorini, Strongyli On the Road returns to Kamari at 21:00 for another free musical gathering. The municipality's Strongyli programme has been moving performances through villages during the summer rather than keeping the festival in one venue, and this late-September stretch closes out that travelling part of the programme.

Saturday 26: animation, rap and another cinema night

Saturday is the busiest single day. At 17:00, a free programme of ANIMASYROS short films is scheduled at the Cyclades Chamber office on the Fira–Pyrgos road.

At 20:30, the Santorini Rap Fest takes over the Imerovigli community hall. The current event listing marks it as free. This is one of the more contemporary entries in a week otherwise heavy on village music, exhibitions and cultural programming.

Also at 20:30, Santo Mine in Oia screens Anyone but You, again free with a reservation link. If you are choosing between Imerovigli and Oia, decide before dinner rather than assuming you can comfortably do both at the same time.

Sunday 27 and Monday 28: prosphoron tradition and the Strongyli finale

At 16:00 on Sunday, the two-day Art of Prosphoron programme begins at the spiritual centre of Panagia Glykogalusa in Karterados. The free event focuses on the Orthodox tradition of preparing prosphoron, the bread used in the Divine Liturgy, and continues on Monday 28 September.

Sunday evening then brings the Ma non Troppo performance to Imerovigli's central square at 21:00, another free Strongyli On the Road date. Monday's second prosphoron session starts at 16:00, while several exhibitions remain open around the island.

The exhibitions that run through the week

The calendar is not only evening events. A photography exhibition on locality, the modern movement and reconstruction 70 years after Santorini's 1956 earthquake continues at the Kastelana Photography Centre in Pyrgos. The group exhibition Gratitudes is also listed through this period, alongside the new Volcano show on Thirasia.

These are useful fallback options if wind, ferry timing or a change of plans wrecks an evening itinerary. Opening hours vary by exhibition, so check the current listing on the day rather than assuming every venue keeps the same hours.

Practical planning for the week

• Do not treat “free” as “no planning required”. Santo Mine's cinema listings include reservations, and small venues can still fill.
• Allow real travel time. Kamari, Imerovigli, Megalochori, Karterados, Oia and Thirasia are not interchangeable neighbourhood stops.
• For Thirasia, check boat connections first. An evening exhibition opening is only useful if your transport plan works in both directions.
• Re-check the calendar on the day. Island events can move because of weather, venue logistics or organiser decisions.
• Residents have the advantage here. This is the sort of week where a last-minute free village event can be better value than another pre-booked tourist activity.
