Holy Friday in Pyrgos: candlelight on the castle hill

One of the most striking traditional events on the island, and largely missed by summer visitors.

Greek Orthodox Easter falls on a different date from Western Easter most years, and Santorini's most memorable version of it happens in Pyrgos, the hilltop village near the island's centre, on Holy Friday.

What happens

As night falls, thousands of small oil lamps and candles are lit across the village's rooftops, stepped lanes and the walls of its ruined Venetian castle, turning the whole hillside into a single glowing silhouette visible from much of the island. A solemn procession carrying the Epitaphios — a decorated bier representing Christ's tomb — winds through the lantern-lit streets, accompanied by hymns and the tolling of church bells.

Why it's worth planning around

Unlike the sunset crowds in Oia, this is a genuinely local, largely unmarketed tradition rather than a staged event — and it happens well outside peak tourist season, since Orthodox Easter typically falls in spring. If your travel dates are flexible and you're visiting outside summer, it's worth checking whether they align with Holy Week.

Good to knowMany restaurants and shops observe reduced hours around Orthodox Easter, particularly on Good Friday itself — check ahead if you're travelling during Holy Week.
