Santorini in April: Easter, spring flowers and a quieter island

A genuinely different island from the summer version — cooler, quieter and with one of the most distinctive local events of the year.

3 min read Plan your trip

April sits at the edge between shoulder and spring — warmer than March, still noticeably cooler than May, and often coinciding with Greek Orthodox Easter, which is one of the most genuine local events on the island's calendar.

Weather

Temperatures typically range from 16–21°C. Sea is cool — 17–18°C — making it a month for walking, wine and culture rather than swimming. Wind is more variable than the settled meltemi of summer, with occasional blustery days.

Orthodox Easter

Greek Orthodox Easter (dates vary year to year — usually between late April and early May) is the year's most important local celebration. The Holy Friday candlelight procession in Pyrgos (see our Easter in Pyrgos guide) is one of the island's most memorable events, relatively unknown to tourists and genuinely worth timing a visit around if your dates allow.

Crowds and prices

April is one of the quietest months for tourism outside of winter, with meaningfully lower prices than May onward. The flip side is that a small number of businesses haven't yet opened for the season, particularly at the more remote caldera-view hotels and some beach-focused spots.

Our verdict

April suits visitors who specifically want the quiet island — walkers, wine travellers, those interested in the local Orthodox calendar — rather than beach holiday seekers. If Orthodox Easter alignment is possible, it's worth checking dates specifically for your target year.
