Santorini's expensive food reputation comes almost entirely from caldera-view restaurants in Oia and Fira's main strip, where you're partly paying for the setting, not the food. Away from that strip — sometimes just one or two streets away — the same quality of cooking is available at a fraction of the price.
The geography of restaurant pricing
A sea view adds roughly 30–50% to the cost of a meal at an equivalent taverna without one, based on an honest comparison of menus between cliff-edge and back-street restaurants in the same village. The further inland you go — Pyrgos, Megalochori, Messaria, even Exo Gonia — the more the prices approximate a normal Greek restaurant rather than a tourist-premium one.
Specific tactics
- Eat your main meal at lunch — many restaurants offer a simpler, cheaper lunch menu than dinner, including some caldera-view places where a lunch reservation is both easier to get and 20–30% less expensive than the equivalent dinner booking.
- Order the house wine — the island's own Assyrtiko at a taverna by the carafe is almost always better value than a bottled restaurant wine, and you're drinking a genuinely distinctive local product rather than an imported fallback.
- Ask what the kitchen recommends today — in a real taverna (see our guide to finding one), the answer usually points toward whatever's freshest and most local, which is also the best value on the menu.
Where to eat specifically
Fira's back streets (one block off the caldera-facing promenade), any taverna in Pyrgos or Megalochori, and the residential streets of Kamari and Perissa away from the beachfront are all consistently cited by visitors as delivering a genuinely good meal at a genuinely reasonable price. Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia (see our restaurant profiles) is the non-view restaurant most consistently mentioned in the same breath as the island's best food overall.
