Mezze culture: how to actually order at a Greek taverna

Sharing plates, not courses — the format most visitors don't realise they're supposed to use.

A common first-timer mistake at a genuine Greek taverna (see our finding a real taverna guide) is ordering the way you would at a Western restaurant — one main course per person, eaten separately. Mezze culture works differently, and understanding it changes the whole meal.

How mezze actually works

Order a spread of smaller dishes for the table to share, rather than one main each — several vegetable and seafood plates, a couple of the fried items covered in our what to eat guide, bread, and maybe one larger shared main if the group is hungry. Dishes arrive as they're ready, not in a fixed course order, and the table works through them together over a couple of hours rather than a fast, sequential meal.

A reasonable spread for a table of four

  • Fava (see our fava guide)
  • A salad — Greek salad or horta (boiled greens)
  • Tomato or courgette fritters
  • Grilled octopus or a smaller seafood plate
  • One larger shared dish — grilled fish or a meat dish — if the table is still hungry after the smaller plates

Why this matters for value too

Mezze-style ordering is usually cheaper per person than everyone ordering an individual main, since you're not each paying for a full portion — see our eating well on a budget guide. It's also simply the way the menu and kitchen are actually designed to be used, so you tend to get a better sense of what a taverna does well.

Pace

Don't expect Western-restaurant speed — a proper mezze meal is meant to unfold slowly, with wine (see our wine pairing guide) alongside rather than a rushed turnover. Asking for the bill is expected to be your move, not the server's — nobody will bring it unprompted.
