After eight weekly batches of English content, we've started translating the site — beginning with German, at /de/. This follows the exact same philosophy that launched the English site: start small, be honest about what isn't finished yet, and grow it weekly rather than machine-translating everything at once and shipping it unreviewed.
What's live in German today
- The homepage, fully translated.
- All 9 department hubs — every section is reachable and named in German, even before it has translated articles.
- 8 flagship articles: best time to visit, getting to Santorini, getting around, the budget guide, best area to stay, the beaches guide, Assyrtiko, and the eruption history.
What's honest about it
Department hubs without translated articles yet say so plainly in German — "Wird gerade übersetzt" ("currently being translated") — with a direct link to the full English section, rather than showing empty pages or forcing German readers back to English with no explanation. Every translated page links to its English original and back, both in the page content and in the technical hreflang tags search engines read.
What's not done yet
This is a first-pass AI translation. It's technically correct and, we think, readable — but it hasn't been reviewed by a native German speaker for tone and phrasing, and we're saying that plainly rather than presenting it as finished. That review is next, before we lean further into German specifically.
French is the planned second language once German has had a proper review pass. Full rollout plan in our content plan and, for anyone extending this site themselves, _source/README-i18n.md.
