Amoudi Bay sits at the base of the cliffs directly below Oia — reached via 216 stone steps cut into the volcanic rock, or by taxi/car down a steep switchback road. It's one of the most distinctive spots on the island: a tiny working harbour with a handful of famous seafood tavernas, a swimming rock for caldera bathing, and the point where boats depart for Thirasia.
The tavernas
Amoudi has a cluster of well-known seafood restaurants right at the water's edge, with fish and octopus grilled and displayed at the waterfront. These are among the most consistently cited dining experiences on the island for fresh seafood specifically — the combination of quality, setting and the drama of arriving via those steps makes it memorable. Reserve ahead in peak season, since the tiny bay has limited seating and strong word-of-mouth demand.
Swimming

The steps
The traditional way down and back up is those 216 steps — genuinely steep, and in summer heat a real workout on the way back up. Many visitors take a donkey up (with the animal-welfare context noted in our donkey guide) or a taxi. Plan the timing: descending at sunset, eating, and returning after dark when it's cooler is a popular approach.
