Emporio, in the south-central part of the island, is Santorini's largest inland village by population — and one of the least visited by tourists relative to its size, since it has no caldera view to draw day-trippers. What it does have is one of the best-preserved traditional village cores on the island.
The kastelli
At Emporio's heart sits a walled medieval quarter (kastelli), built defensively with the outer walls of houses forming a continuous barrier against pirate raids — a design shared with parts of Pyrgos and Oia's own older kastelli, but unusually complete here. Narrow, shaded lanes wind between stone houses, largely unchanged and free of the shops and cafés that have reshaped similar quarters elsewhere on the island.
Goulas and the windmills
A hilltop Venetian tower (Goulas) overlooks the village, and a scattering of old windmills — once used to grind the grain grown across the island's dry, terraced fields — sit on the surrounding hills, some restored, some in ruins.
Why visit
Emporio suits travellers who've already covered the caldera villages and want to see a genuinely lived-in, non-touristic side of Santorini. It's close to Perissa and the wineries around Megalochori and Pyrgos, making it easy to combine with either.
Practical notes
Emporio has limited tourist infrastructure by design — a few local tavernas rather than a restaurant strip, and modest bus links compared to Fira or Oia. A rental car or taxi (see our getting around guide) makes it far easier to combine with the wineries and Perissa in a single day than relying on buses. It pairs naturally with a stop in Pyrgos (see our Pyrgos guide) given the short distance between the two.
