Karterados sits just south-east of Fira, close enough to walk into the capital but without any of its caldera-facing premium. It's not a destination in its own right so much as a practical, often overlooked base — flat streets, straightforward parking, and a short hop to Fira's bus station, shops and restaurants.
What's actually here
A residential village with a scattering of guesthouses and apartment rentals, generally at a noticeably lower price point than equivalent rooms in Fira itself. Ftelos Brewery, covered in our craft beer guide and cooking classes guide, sits nearby, making Karterados a reasonable base if a brewery visit is on your list.
Why stay here
Budget and practicality — see our budget hotels guide. You give up the caldera view entirely, but gain flat, easy streets and walking distance to Fira's full range of services, at meaningfully lower rates than a caldera-facing room. A sensible choice for a first or last night near the airport, or for a longer stay where daily convenience matters more than the view.
