The view, honestly compared
Both offer extraordinary caldera views. Oia's specific advantage is the sunset geometry: the sun drops almost exactly into the caldera opening from Oia's north-western position, framed by the cliffs on both sides. From Imerovigli, you're higher but the caldera opening is to the north-west — stunning panorama, but a slightly different angle on the sunset itself. Neither is objectively "better" — they're different.
Steps and access
Both villages involve stairs. Oia's stepped lanes in the historic centre are narrower and more tourist-dense; Imerovigli's steps are fewer in total and far less trafficked. If you or anyone in your group has mobility considerations, Imerovigli is more manageable — though either warrants a direct question to your specific hotel about step counts from reception to room.
Evenings
Oia fills with day-trippers through sunset and empties noticeably by 9pm, leaving the village quieter and somewhat emptier than you might expect for its reputation. Imerovigli has almost no evening foot traffic beyond its own hotel guests. If you want a lively evening scene, neither is right — you want Fira (see our Fira guide).
Practical access to the rest of the island
Oia has its own frequent bus stop directly on the main route. Imerovigli's bus stop serves the same line but with slightly less frequent specific services — the difference matters if you're planning to move around the island daily without a car.
Our take
For the sunset specifically: Oia. For a quieter, more secluded stay at comparable or better-value prices: Imerovigli. Most people who've stayed in both report that Imerovigli exceeded expectations and Oia met them — which isn't the same as Oia being disappointing, but does suggest Imerovigli is underrated relative to how heavily it's overshadowed by its more famous neighbour.
