Santorini isn't an obvious cycling destination — the caldera-rim roads are steep, narrow, and often busy with cars, buses and quad bikes in summer. That said, a bike (regular or e-bike) works genuinely well on a handful of flatter, quieter routes, and e-bike rental has grown specifically because it makes the island's hills manageable.
Where cycling works well
The flatter inland and southern stretches — around Megalochori, Vlychada and Akrotiri (see our Megalochori guide) — have quieter roads and far less elevation change than the caldera rim, making them the most realistic part of the island for a relaxed ride. The east coast between Kamari and Perissa is similarly flat, following the base of Mesa Vouno.
Where it really doesn't
The caldera-rim road connecting Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia is steep, narrow, and shared with a lot of vehicle traffic in season — not a road we'd recommend cycling, regular bike or e-bike, especially in peak summer. If the caldera view is what you're after by bike, the walking-only cliff path (see our Fira-to-Oia hike guide) is the better way to experience it.
E-bikes vs. regular rental bikes
Given the island's hills, e-bike rental has become the more practical option outside the flattest routes — worth the extra cost if cycling is a meaningful part of your plans rather than a one-off activity. Regular bikes are cheaper and fine for the flat southern and east-coast routes specifically.
Heat and timing
As with hiking (see our packing list), early morning is meaningfully more comfortable than midday for any real distance in summer — there's little shade on most of the island's roads.
