Santorini is one of the most popular proposal destinations in Europe, and the landscape delivers on that expectation in a real way. The practical logistics — choosing the right spot, timing it well, handling the photography — are worth thinking through more carefully than most "best proposal spots" articles do.
Choosing a spot that actually works
The Oia castle sunset viewpoint is the most photographed proposal location on the island, but also genuinely one of the most crowded — strangers in every frame is a real risk in peak season. Better alternatives that still deliver extraordinary backdrops:

Photography
Decide in advance whether you want professional proposal photography. Several photographers operate specifically in this niche on Santorini — a quick search for "Santorini proposal photographer" will find them — and the cost is usually much lower than you might expect relative to the result. If you're doing it without a professional, brief a friend on exactly where to stand and what camera settings to use before the moment rather than hoping it works out.
Timing
Sunrise proposals get consistently better results than sunset ones for photography (better light, no crowds) but require an alarm at 5am. Evening proposals have the drama of the sunset but the crowd competition. The 30 minutes after sunset — blue hour — is often the best compromise: the crowd disperses, the light is still beautiful, and the caldera lights begin to glow.
