Red Beach near Akrotiri is one of Santorini's most recognisable landscapes: dark volcanic sand below a steep wall of red and black rock. It is also a place where old travel advice can become dangerous. The Municipality of Thira has an explicit safety notice reminding visitors that access was prohibited because the slopes are unstable and rockfalls can occur suddenly and unpredictably.
So I am not going to tell you to “wear good shoes and walk down to the beach.” That was exactly the sort of casual instruction this guide used to give, and it is not responsible guidance against the municipality's own warning.
The official safety history you need to know
In an April 2018 public notice, the Municipality of Thira said visitor access to Red Beach had been prohibited since August 2013 by police and port authorities. The municipality cited unstable slopes and reiterated a local decision prohibiting passage and approach by bathers and walkers. The same notice says geological studies found collapse could be instantaneous and unpredictable.
That is the controlling safety context I would use when planning. Online tourism pages are not perfectly consistent — some still describe a path towards the beach — but a generic destination description does not cancel an explicit municipal rockfall prohibition.
What I would do instead of descending under the cliff
Use a lawful viewpoint or roadside/approach perspective where current barriers and signs allow it. The colour contrast is the main reason most people want to see Red Beach, and you do not need to stand below the unstable slope to understand the landscape.
Consider seeing the coastline from the water. Boat and caldera excursions often give a very different perspective on Santorini's volcanic south coast. Routes and stopping arrangements change, so confirm what a specific operator actually does rather than assuming “Red Beach” in a tour title means safe shore access.
For swimming, choose a beach that is actually operating as a beach. Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari and other established beach areas make much more sense when your goal is a long swim, sunbed, meal or easy family beach day.
If on-site conditions look different when you arrive
Rules and access arrangements can change over time, but visitors should never self-declare a closure obsolete. If authorities formally reopen a specific route in the future, current official signage and municipal/port information should make that clear. Until then, I would follow the conservative interpretation: do not cross closure barriers or warning signs, and do not stand beneath the unstable cliff face.
If a tour guide, driver or stranger tells you “everyone does it”, that is not an official reopening.
Pair Red Beach with Akrotiri, not a risky swim
The nearby Akrotiri archaeological site is the better anchor for this part of the island. Build the southern trip around the excavations, then add a safe Red Beach viewpoint if current access permits. That gives the volcanic landscape some historical context without making the beach descent the day's objective.

Why the cliffs look so dramatic
The colours reflect Santorini's volcanic geology, with contrasting deposits exposed around the Akrotiri coast. You do not need an invented “secret” geology story to appreciate it: the striking wall is evidence of the island's complex volcanic past, and the same steep material that makes the scene photogenic is part of the reason slope stability deserves respect.
Photography without the dangerous angle
I would use a longer lens or a wider composition from a permitted viewpoint rather than trying to reproduce the classic below-cliff image. Light and weather matter more than an exact social-media position. If barriers or signs shift the legal viewing area, work with the view you have.

My decision rule
See Red Beach as a volcanic landscape and safety-sensitive viewpoint, not a must-swim beach. The island has plenty of places where you can enter the sea without knowingly placing yourself beneath an unstable cliff. When official safety advice and an old blog disagree, the safety authority wins.
