Santorini earns its reputation on several counts. It also has a few experiences that get sold as unmissable but consistently underwhelm visitors, for specific, predictable reasons. Knowing which is which saves a lot of queuing.

Genuinely beautiful light. Genuinely uncomfortable crowd. Arriving an hour early to secure a spot means standing in a hot, jostling crowd for 60 minutes for a 4-minute sunset. Better: any of the quieter caldera-rim spots in our sunset spots guide, or an early reservation at a caldera-view restaurant where you sit comfortably with a drink and watch the same sun from your own table.
The Fira cable car queue
On days when cruise ships dock (check your dates — they're predictable), the Fira cable car line can be genuinely very long in both directions. The experience itself is fine — a few minutes, good view of the port — but not worth a 45-minute queue when the steps down or a short walk to a less busy alternative achieves the same thing. Better: walk the caldera path to Firostefani or Imerovigli, or time your cable car use for early morning before ships dock.

Pricing the food by the view rather than its quality, and banking on tourist footfall rather than repeat business — the consistent description across negative reviews of a specific category of caldera-facing restaurant. The donkey ride up from the port
More an obligation forced on tourists in the pre-cable-car era than a recommended experience — see our horseback and donkey guide for the welfare context. The cable car covers the same route faster and without the animal-welfare concerns. Better: the cable car, unambiguously.
What isn't overrated
For balance: the Fira-to-Oia walk genuinely is one of the best things you can do on the island. Assyrtiko genuinely is distinctive. The Akrotiri excavation genuinely is extraordinary. And the caldera view in general — from a hotel room, terrace or quiet clifftop — genuinely justifies the reputation, when you encounter it without a crowd.
