Quieter Santorini beaches: Koloumbos, Baxedes, Mesa Pigadia and more

If Kamari and Perissa feel too organised and Red Beach feels too complicated, Santorini still has quieter shoreline — but I would stop calling every hard-to-reach cove a 'secret beach'. The useful question is not whether Instagram has discovered it. It is whether the access, facilities, wind exposure and swimming conditions suit your day.

The Municipality of Thira's current Hidden Beaches guidance specifically highlights Koloumbos, Mesa Pigadia, Baxedes, Exo Gialos and Monolithos. That is a much better starting point than copying old lists that mix up locations or send travellers along questionable cliff paths.

Koloumbos: wild northeast coast, minimal fuss

Koloumbos is the option I would choose for a more undeveloped volcanic-beach feel without building the day around Red Beach. The municipality describes a pebbled beach beneath the imposing Cape Koloumbos on the northeast coast. It is notably less resort-like than Kamari or Perissa.

That also means you should arrive self-sufficient: water, sun protection and whatever you need for the time you plan to stay. Do not assume a beach bar, lifeguard, shade or easy transport simply because the beach has a name on Google Maps.

Baxedes: quieter north-coast option near Oia

Baxedes is useful if you are staying around Oia but want a beach break without crossing the whole island. The municipality places it not far from Oia and notes loungers are available. I would still treat those facilities as seasonal rather than guaranteed on a particular date.

The north and northeast coasts can feel very different from the sheltered image people have of the caldera. If the wind is strong, check the sea before committing to a long swim and have a backup beach on another side of the island.

Mesa Pigadia: south-coast scenery without the Red Beach route

Mesa Pigadia is the southern-coast alternative I would put into an Akrotiri-area day. The municipality describes it as a picturesque gem, and it makes far more sense to treat it as its own destination than to invent a cliff scramble between neighbouring beaches.

If you are combining the south coast with Akrotiri archaeological site, build the archaeology first and make the beach flexible. That way wind, road conditions or a change of plan does not wreck the whole day.

Exo Gialos: close to Fira, but feels different

Exo Gialos is near Fira and can be a practical way to get a swim without joining the main southeast resort strip. It is the sort of beach I like for a short, low-drama break: close enough to the island's transport hub to fit into a mixed day, but visually different from the caldera villages.

Monolithos: not really 'hidden', but useful for families

The municipality groups Monolithos into its Hidden Beaches page and describes shallow water plus sports facilities. I would not sell it as an undiscovered cove; its real value is practical. Families wanting a simpler beach day may prefer that to chasing a remote shoreline with no shade or facilities.

What about Katharos, Pori and other names on old lists?

You will see many other small beaches in blogs and map apps. Some are perfectly legitimate local stops, but location descriptions, road access and facilities are often copied inaccurately between sites. The previous version of this page, for example, incorrectly placed Katharos near Akrotiri. I would rather remove that bad direction than preserve it for the sake of a longer list.

Use the exact map pin, check the final road on satellite view if you are driving, and ask your accommodation or a local operator about current access when a route looks marginal. Never interpret 'hidden beach' as permission to cross private land, closure barriers or unstable cliff areas.

Wind, cliffs and swimming: the safety trade-off

Quiet beaches often have fewer safety cues and less infrastructure. Check the sea before getting in, avoid swimming alone in rough conditions, and do not use a cliff face as your shade shelter where rockfall is plausible. On the volcanic south coast especially, a beautiful cliff is not automatically a safe place to sit.

For an easier all-day swim with reliable food, toilets and organised sections, Kamari or Perissa/Perivolos will often be the smarter choice. Quiet is only better when the logistics match the traveller.
