Most Santorini advice is written for a generic traveller. This page is specifically for first-time visitors — the things that are specific to this island and this experience, not universal travel tips you already know.
1. The caldera view is genuinely better than photos suggest
Photos of Santorini tend to be wide-angle and taken in perfect conditions. The reality — standing on a clifftop terrace with the flooded volcanic caldera dropping hundreds of metres below you on three sides — is more spatially dramatic than a flat photo can convey. Don't oversell it to yourself and then be disappointed; be prepared to be genuinely surprised.
2. The streets are stairs, not streets
In the caldera villages — Oia, Fira, Imerovigli — the "streets" are often steep stone steps rather than flat lanes, and they're uneven. Pack shoes with grip and ankle support, not flip-flops. This matters more than you'd expect.
3. Book the caldera-view rooms early, or change your expectations
A "standard double" in Oia has been sold out for your June dates for three months already. If a caldera-view room matters, either book very early or genuinely adjust your base — see our where to stay guide.
4. Oia's sunset will be crowded. That's not a reason to skip it
The crowd at the castle viewpoint doesn't ruin the sunset — it's just different from the empty-clifftop version in your mind. Go once. But also try one of the alternatives in our sunset spots guide for comparison.
5. The beaches are volcanic, not tropical
No white sand. Black volcanic sand that gets extremely hot underfoot in July/August, dramatic cliff settings, and crystal-clear water. See our beaches guide for what you're actually choosing between.
6. Transport between villages takes longer than the map suggests
Oia to Fira is 11km. With peak-season traffic, a bus at the wrong time, or a busy taxi rank, that can be 40–50 minutes. Plan with that buffer or you'll be late for your sunset dinner reservation.
7. Drink Assyrtiko at a winery, not from a supermarket shelf
The island's wine is genuinely distinctive (see our Assyrtiko guide). A supermarket bottle and a tasting flight at one of the wineries it came from are very different experiences — do the winery visit at least once, even if wine isn't your primary interest; see our beginner's winery guide.
8. The famous aerial drone photos? Illegal at the caldera rim
The most-shared Santorini aerial images on Instagram were almost certainly flown illegally or with commercial permits. The caldera rim is a no-fly zone — see our drone rules guide before you pack one.
9. Eat one meal inland
Pyrgos, Megalochori, even the back streets of Fira away from the caldera path — better food, lower prices, more genuine atmosphere. See our finding a real taverna guide.
10. Leave more time than you think you need
Three days feels like enough in advance. Most people who visit for the first time say they wished they had five. The island is small but the things worth doing properly — a full caldera walk, a winery afternoon, a beach day, Akrotiri, a slow meal at Amoudi — fill more time than a tight three-day schedule allows.
