Our best time to visit guide covers the broad picture. This page goes month by month with specific temperature ranges, rainfall expectations and what each month is actually like for a visitor.
January
Avg temp: 12–16°C. Rainfall: moderate. Crowds: minimal. Winter at its most pronounced — many hotels, restaurants and shops closed, ferry schedules thin, the caldera often dramatic under storm light. Very cheap. Only suits visitors who actively want the quiet, closed-up island experience.
February
Avg temp: 12–16°C. Rainfall: highest of the year (still not very high). Crowds: minimal. Similar to January, slightly more settled weather. Orthodox pre-Lent celebrations (Apókries) add some life to village squares, and some of the island's best photography light occurs in this period.
March
Avg temp: 13–18°C. Rainfall: decreasing. Crowds: starting to build. The island wakes up — more hotels and restaurants opening, ferry frequency increasing, and often genuinely beautiful spring wildflowers on the volcanic hillsides. Still cool for swimming but warm enough for comfortable walking and sightseeing.
April
Avg temp: 16–21°C. Rainfall: low. Crowds: moderate. One of our recommended months — pleasant warmth, open businesses, tolerable crowds, and a good chance of the island's most beautiful spring light. Orthodox Easter (dates vary year to year) falls in April most years and brings local celebrations worth witnessing; see our Easter in Pyrgos guide. Sea still cool for most swimmers.
May
Avg temp: 20–25°C. Rainfall: very low. Crowds: building. Warming up quickly, sea approaching swimmable temperatures, most businesses open. One of the best overall months — warm enough for beaches, not yet the full heat and pressure of July–August.
June
Avg temp: 25–29°C. Rainfall: negligible. Crowds: high. Early summer — sea genuinely warm, long days (sunset around 8:45pm), and the island in full swing. Crowds are high but not yet the August peak. The meltemi wind begins to make itself felt.
July
Avg temp: 27–31°C. Rainfall: negligible. Crowds: peak. The hottest, busiest, most expensive month. The meltemi is strongest. Oia's sunset viewpoint is at maximum density. Water is warm and beaches are at their most lively. Everything is open but many things are also at full tourist premium pricing.
August
Avg temp: 27–31°C. Rainfall: negligible. Crowds: peak. Near-identical to July. Greek domestic holiday month adds significant local traffic on top of international visitors. Book everything well in advance for August.
September
Avg temp: 23–28°C. Rainfall: rare. Crowds: easing. One of our top recommended months — still very warm, sea at its warmest of the year, crowds visibly easing from August's peak, and the wine harvest beginning at some producers. Sunset moves earlier (around 7:30pm by mid-month). Excellent combination of summer warmth and shoulder-season manageability.
October
Avg temp: 19–24°C. Rainfall: increasing. Crowds: low. Another recommended shoulder season month. Warm enough for outdoor exploration and comfortable beach days on drier days; the sea stays warm from the summer. Some businesses start closing mid-month. Prices drop noticeably. Dramatic weather light when storms do pass through.
November
Avg temp: 15–19°C. Rainfall: moderate. Crowds: minimal. The island shifts to off-season mode rapidly through November — closures accelerating, visitors few, and the pace genuinely slow. Can be beautiful in a bleak way for photographers. Not recommended unless you specifically want the quiet island experience and have checked what's open.
December
Avg temp: 12–16°C. Rainfall: moderate. Crowds: minimal. Quiet, cool, and largely closed. Christmas and New Year bring some festivity to Fira in particular, with limited but genuine celebrations. The caldera views are unchanged and often dramatic under winter skies. As with January, this suits a very specific kind of traveller rather than a general recommendation.
