May has overtaken June as the most-recommended month among repeat visitors and those who've specifically timed a trip to avoid peak crowds. It sits in the ideal window where the island is fully open, pleasantly warm, and not yet overrun.
Weather
Temperatures climb through the month from around 20°C in early May to 25°C and above by the end. Sea temperatures are cooler than summer — typically 19–21°C — which is comfortable for many swimmers though cooler than the August or October conditions. The island's brief spring green, with wildflowers on the volcanic hillsides, is specific to April and May and worth experiencing if you've only seen the sun-bleached summer version.
Crowds and availability
Genuinely manageable. The island is not empty — May has grown in popularity as word has spread — but the Oia viewpoint at sunset is a different experience than August, and reservations at good restaurants are obtainable with reasonable advance notice. Book accommodation well ahead regardless; May availability tightens earlier than it used to.
What's open
Virtually everything. Unlike October, where early closures begin at the month's end, May has the island fully operational and increasingly busy as the month progresses.
Our verdict
For many visitors — particularly those for whom the sea temperature doesn't need to be warm — May is the single best month to visit. The combination of full infrastructure, manageable crowds, good weather and the brief spring bloom make it a month that rewards specifically planning around.
