Three days is the minimum we'd suggest for a first visit — enough to see Fira, Oia and at least one beach without cramming everything into single, exhausting outings. This plan assumes you're based centrally (Fira or Imerovigli) so travel time between stops stays short.
Day 1: Arrive and settle into Fira
Check in, then walk the caldera path north toward Firostefani and Imerovigli for an easy first afternoon — see our Fira-to-Oia hike guide for the full route if you want to extend it. Watch sunset from anywhere along that stretch rather than fighting Oia's crowds on day one.
Day 2: Oia and the north
Spend the morning in Oia before the day-trip crowds peak — see our Oia guide. Bus back to Fira for lunch, then use the afternoon for the Museum of Prehistoric Thera or a slower wander through Fira's back lanes; see our museums guide.
Day 3: South to the volcano, beaches or wine
Pick one: a half-day boat trip to the volcanic islets and hot springs (see our boat tours guide), a beach day at Kamari or Perissa, or an afternoon of wine tasting around Megalochori (see our wineries guide). Any of the three fills the day comfortably alongside a final sunset.
