October is one of the two months (alongside May and early June) that experienced Santorini visitors most consistently recommend — and it's increasingly the one that surprises first-timers who assumed summer was the only real option.
Weather
Daytime temperatures range from around 19–24°C, occasionally warmer in early October, cooling toward 17–20°C by the end of the month. The sea is actually at its warmest annual temperature in October — heated all summer, it stays above 23°C through most of the month, making it genuinely the best swimming month from a water-temperature perspective. Rain becomes more possible from mid-October onward, though actual rainfall is still relatively light.
Crowds and prices
A visible and meaningful drop from August levels, particularly after the first week. The island feels calmer, queues at Oia's viewpoint are shorter, and hotel rates soften noticeably from peak-season highs. Many businesses — including most of the island's restaurants and hotels — remain open through October, with closures beginning to accelerate in November.
What's different in October specifically
The harvest season (see our best time to visit guide) may still be running at some wineries in early October — worth checking with specific producers if this matters. The light shifts too: lower sun angle means softer, warmer tones in photos, and a noticeably different quality of sunset than July or August.
Our verdict
If you have any flexibility on travel dates, October (and to a similar extent, late September) is the month most likely to give you everything Santorini is famous for — weather, views, food and wine — without the peak-season friction. The crowds don't disappear entirely, but they ease enough to matter.
