Daytime highs typically sit around 15–17°C, with the island's rain and wind season well underway. Clear winter days do happen and can be genuinely beautiful for photography and walking, but the weather is unpredictable week to week.

Fira and a handful of year-round businesses put up modest festive decorations, and some restaurants and hotels see a short uptick in bookings around Christmas and New Year specifically — worth checking availability for those exact dates if that's your window, since the rest of December is genuinely quiet.
Crowds and what's open
Most caldera-view hotels, beach-focused businesses and seasonal restaurants are closed through December, typically not reopening until March. A limited set of year-round options remain, mostly in Fira. This is not the month for a first Santorini visit built around the classic caldera-hotel-and-sunset experience.

December suits travellers who specifically want to see the island's quiet, resident-facing off-season, ideally around the Christmas/New Year window when a little more is open — not a budget alternative to a summer trip.
