Santorini in July: peak season, full heat, full island

Hot, busy and expensive — the classic Santorini summer, for better and worse.

3 min read Plan your trip

July is peak season in every sense — hot, dry, crowded and priced accordingly. It's the Santorini of the postcards, and for visitors who plan around the crowds rather than fighting them, it's also genuinely one of the best months for reliable, hot, beach-and-boat-trip weather.

Weather

Daytime highs typically reach 28–31°C with very little rainfall and long, cloudless days. Sea temperatures are warm and comfortable for swimming throughout the month. The meltemi wind is a regular feature, which takes the edge off the heat but can affect smaller boat trips on stronger days.

Crowds and prices

This is one of the two busiest months of the year, alongside August. The Oia sunset viewpoint, the Fira–Oia hike and the caldera-view restaurants are at their most crowded, and accommodation prices sit at or near their annual peak. Book everything — hotels, ferries, popular restaurants — well in advance.

Worth knowing

Santorini's summer arts calendar is active in July, including jazz and music events on the island — worth checking what's on for your specific dates. See our best time to visit guide for how July compares to the rest of the year if your dates are flexible.

Our verdict

July delivers reliably excellent beach and boat-trip weather at the cost of the year's heaviest crowds and prices — worth it specifically for travellers whose dates are fixed to summer, less so for anyone with the flexibility to shift toward June or September instead.
