Santorini's airport is officially named Santorini (Thira) Airport, with IATA code JTR. It sits in the centre-east of the island near Kamari, about 5km from Fira, 14km from Oia — modest distances that can still take 20–40 minutes in peak-season traffic.
What the airport is like
This is a small, single-terminal regional airport — functional rather than elaborate, with limited seating, a few cafés, and small duty-free facilities. In peak season it gets very busy; arrival queues at passport control (for non-Schengen travellers) and baggage reclaim can run slow when several flights land close together. Budget extra time before a tight onward connection or ferry, and expect to wait.
Getting from the airport to your hotel
Taxi — the most common option, with a taxi rank directly outside arrivals. Fixed metered fares apply: expect around €15–20 to Fira, €25–35 to Oia, €10–12 to Kamari. In peak season the taxi queue can be long after busy arrivals — if your hotel offers a transfer, it's often worth taking for this reason alone.
Bus (KTEL) — the cheapest option; a regular bus stops at the airport and connects to Fira's central bus station, from which you can connect elsewhere. Inexpensive, but slow and not suited to heavy luggage if you're continuing to a caldera-view hotel with steps.
Hotel transfer — most caldera-view hotels offer private transfers, often included in higher room categories. Worth arranging in advance, since arriving after a long flight without a plan at a busy airport adds unnecessary stress.
Rental car — several car rental companies have desks at or near the airport (see our getting around guide). Practical if you're using a car for the full stay; less so if you're only staying in caldera villages where parking is a problem.
The airport to Oia specifically
There's no direct bus from the airport to Oia — you'd bus to Fira and connect from there, which takes 45–60 minutes total. A taxi or private transfer is the realistic option for Oia-bound arrivals, given the distance and luggage involved.
